We found that our task was enormous. Why? Because of the rapid advancements and uniqueness within the paper industry, for example, paper grades, roll diameters, roll widths, equipment needs, lift trucks, roll clamp design and specification, storage procedures, shipping and handling requirements, safe job procedures, and more.

Similarities in the Paper Industries:

Yes, there are similarities in both industries. For example the need to:

Reduce: Paper damage, equipment abuse, hazards, incidents, etc.

Improve: safety, safety awareness, roll handling techniques, roll storage procedures, etc.

Although the industry was paper handling, the safety issues were different and obviously the solutions were different. The paper mill training materials did not match the needs of the converting and packaging operations. Therefore, the training programs developed for the paper mills would not adequately train the converting or packaging facilities.

To meet the Paper Roll handling training needs for the Paper Industry, Shephard's developed "The Paper Roll Clamp Operator Safety and Certification Basic Course," for the paper mills, and different training system for the converting and packaging facilities.
